A Little Magic eBook Valerie Gillen Reviews
If you are a believer, then this book is for you! The magic, intrigue, & family love make this book for all ages
I feel this would be a great book for middle-grade YA novel. It was a quick read, but didn't go much in depth into character development, setting, or the alternate worlds created within. I think after reading a vast amount of YA-fantasy novels, my expectations were a bit higher, but, in my opinion, it would be a good read for pre-teens for it's interesting story line and characters they could relate to. Overall, quick and fun.
I really enjoyed this book.It reminded me a bit of kim harrison's series but written for a younger group.I read the book in almost one sitting it had me hooked from the first few pages.I dont want to give any spoilers. The book is simply a fun read it really was.I loved the sarcastic twist to alot of the lines it made me laugh out loud a few times.I really hope the author writes another book after this one with what happens next to the family.I would read it in a heartbeat.I would also like to say I love the cover design for the book the colors are amazing.I would recomend this book to anyone the likes a little magic in thier life. This book has witches and fairies and a cat with an attitude whats not to like.
A very fun fantasy story staring a young girl who discovers she is from a line of witches. She then needs to save a fairy world and her family from a mysterious theft and evil plotting. She comes out with shinning colors and learns her strength. A great read for tween/young adult
This novella was a delightful read. I would target it mostly for the middle school/YA crowd as the storyline, characters and writing seemed perfect for that group. As an adult I still found the story engaging. I liked the typical good vs. evil approach and felt interested in the characters, especially Siobhan and Alicia. It was a bit predictable in spots as I could definitely see where the story was headed, but that did not detract from my enjoyment of it. I think that this story could be fleshed out into a full fledged novel, and if handled correctly, even a good YA series.
Siobhan Kelly as any teenager would be is upset about her parents uprooting her from one side of the country to the other for a grandmother she's never met who is in a coma. She's now living in her big creepy house full of things she isn't allowed to touch with a mother who seems like she's also never been in the house before despite growing up there. The house has a garden that never seems to die, even in the middle of winter and secret rooms full of who knows what. All Siobhan wants is to move back to California and continue her step dancing until a weird girl at school and a small fluffy cat found in the woods lead to more excitement than she bargained for.
A Little Magic is a great young adult read, possibly even middle grade but it does have some larger vocabulary and a few profanities thrown in. It has a plot that will pull you in and keep you guessing and entertained right from the beginning. I thought Siobhan was a very well-developed character and (even though I found it annoying as an adult, a teen might really appreciate it) I liked how the author used the stereotype of Siobhan being from California and all the kids thinking she was a "valley girl" and bringing in that stereotypical dialogue and carrying it through from the beginning of the book all the way to the end. This was a fun and quick read and I can see the author writing more stories about Siobhan and her family in the future.
I would have loved more background on the rest of the supporting characters in the book, especially Alicia and the background of Siobhan's mom and Johanna, perhaps a flashback or two of when they were younger. Their stories are told briefly for the most part but I think more background could have added a lot more depth to the story. Also, the book does have some formatting errors that make it somewhat annoying but not bad enough to detract from the story itself.
I found this story to be so engaging. Halfway through, my needed recharging, and I was so annoyed as I didn't want to stop reading. I had to know how things turned out for young Siobhan, her Grandmother, and the Faery Realm.
I would love to read more about this Irish step dancing teen witch and her magical family tree. I hope this character gets a sequel or two. A fun read, beginning to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It held my interest throughout the story. I would recommend this book to fantasy lovers.
